On September 6, 2025, sixteen EF Academy students and two staff members left campus for a 2.5 mile hike in Hollywood, California, led by Mr. Duque and Dr. Windmon.
The hike wasn’t just about exercise. It was about building community, enjoying California’s natural beauty, and giving students a break from their daily routines. With sunny skies and temperatures around 80°F, the group set out ready for both adventure and connection.
As students walked the trail, they took in iconic Los Angeles views while sharing conversation. “I really liked the views,” said Dr. Windmon, one of the trip leaders. She added that activities like this are important for EF students because, “it’s good for kids to explore the city they live in.” The trip gave students a chance to see a new side of California, far from classrooms and city streets, and the group performed even better than expected.
Mr. Duque also highlighted the benefits of outdoor experiences. “Getting students out of their rooms to experience nature and see iconic parts of LA, like the Hollywood sign, is important,” he said. “It allows students to connect, get some exercise, and appreciate nature.” Both leaders agreed that the students handled the hike well, battling the heat and supporting one another along the way.
The day wrapped up with a stop at a local favorite, In-N-Out Burger, where students and staff enjoyed lunch together and swapped stories from the trail. Reflecting on the trip, Dr. Windmon hoped students would take away “the joy of hiking,” while Mr. Duque confirmed that EF Academy has many more outdoor activities planned, including hikes, a fishing trip, footgolf, a Joshua Tree trip, and ocean kayaking.
More than just a hike, the trip became a memory of friendship, teamwork, and a deeper connection to life at EF Academy.
