When it comes to ice hockey EF Academy Pasadena can be proud about one very talented student and player: Adele Johnson.
Ice hockey is a game where two teams compete against each other on ice. Its main objective is to score points using a curved stick (hockey stick) and a puck. This sport is characterized by physical contact and team based competition. During the match each team has six members on the ice: one goalkeeper, two defensemen and lastly three forwards. All of these positions work together in order to score points and win.
Johnson is currently a 10th grader and is known for her very positive attitude, good work ethic and hard work. The beginning of her journey began when she first tried figure skating at the age of 10. Later on, at the age of 13, her skating passion led her to try her powers in ice hockey.
When asked about her earliest memory of the sport she said with a smile: “When I was at the rink one day figure skating I saw a hockey team playing and having lots of fun, so I thought I’d try it out and soon I fell in love with the sport.”

Currently Johnson plays as a center or forward for the “LA Lions 16U AAA” which is the highest level of hockey in her age group.
But getting there wasn’t easy. She described that it takes a lot of work and determination in order to achieve this high of a level. Moreover it requires a lot of energy and time to balance all the incoming school work with practice and tournaments. It’s also important to not let the mental block take over when someone gets hurt.
However, despite all that, Johnson keeps on going. During the interview she mentioned that her dream is to play professionally in the Professional Women’s Hockey League which is also known as the PWHL. With every game she gets closer and closer with her achievements including getting into the Pacific Districts Camp, which is the best camp in California.
Everyday she improves significantly, learning how to play with difficult people, how to think strategically and how to work in a team. The most important learning is how to treat loss as a learning opportunity. With that she also mentioned that she deeply admires a player called Cadence Liu, a Harvard D1 Commit, and one day she wants to be even better than her.
Lastly, Johnson mentioned that she would recommend hockey to those who want to try it. She said that a part of being a good player is to have a good work ethic, ability to work in a team, and determination. The most important thing is “Love for the sport,” which is key to being successful. All of this was followed by a very inspirational quote:
“This sport is very difficult, but if you push through, you will love it.”
In summary, Adele Johnson is a great player and a great example of a hard working person that many students at EF look up to. She is bound to succeed in the future.
