For many student-athletes, success is measured by wins and losses. But for Joyce Wu, a high school tennis player, the journey is more about growth, resilience, and learning how to stay calm under pressure.
Before picking up a tennis racket, Wu was originally a badminton player. After moving to the United States, she noticed that badminton was not as popular, so she decided to try tennis, a sport with similar skills. Influenced by her parents, who both play tennis, she eventually joined her school’s team. At first, her goal was simple: “I wanted to be healthier,” she said.
Now, tennis has become a regular part of Wu’s life. She trains four days a week, practicing from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. after school. Despite her dedication, one of her biggest challenges is competing against stronger opponents. “Even though I train seriously every day, losing matches can make me feel like my effort isn’t paying off,” she admitted.
Still, what stands out most is her mindset. Instead of focusing only on winning, Wu focuses on effort and improvement. During matches, especially against more experienced players, she reminds herself to stay calm and focused. “I just try to do my best and focus on returning the ball and hitting good angles,” she explained. With encouragement from her coaches, she has learned to manage pressure and approach each match with a steady attitude.
One of her most memorable experiences came unexpectedly when she had to switch from doubles to singles during a match. The sudden change made the moment both exciting and challenging. Her first singles match also changed her perspective. She expected her opponent to be serious and intense, but instead found her kind and friendly. This experience taught her that competition does not always have to be stressful; it can also be respectful and positive.
On the court, Wu describes herself as calm and patient, never rushing or panicking. Although she once considered quitting because of the difficulty of training, she chose to continue, which shows her commitment to both the sport and her team.
Looking forward, Wu hopes to improve her serve and become more consistent. She also plans to continue playing tennis in college and challenge herself at a higher level. For her, tennis is more than just a sport; it is a journey of perseverance, self-growth, and quiet determination.
