In the heart of Pasadena, California, a new era dawned for aspiring young athletes as EF Academy introduced a basketball program that has already made waves in the local sports scene.

The EF Academy gymnasium is equipped with the latest technology, including high-quality courts, advanced training equipment, and video analysis tools. This investment in infrastructure reflects the school’s dedication to nurturing the potential of every player, from novices to seasoned competitors. However, what truly sets this institution apart is its commitment to promoting a strong sports culture, particularly basketball.

A key factor behind the success of EF Academy’s basketball program will be its exceptional coaching staff. Led by Coach Roy, a seasoned veteran with an impressive track record of developing young talent, and his assistant Coach E. Both coaches bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the court. Having been coaching basketball for 7 years, Coach Roy came to EF Pasadena especially to teach history and geography, but when given the opportunity to coach the new basketball team, he accepted immediately.

His philosophy is pretty defense-oriented so he’d rather focus more on defense because he claims ‘defense creates offense’.

Unfortunately, the school cannot make playoffs this year until next year due to a CIF norm (California Interscholastic Federation), so the program is working on a 2-year plan, to try to work towards making the playoffs for next year.

For this year, the main goal is to create a culture of discipline and respect. “The basketball team will still be playing to win every single game in a disciplined and respectful way,” said Coach Roy

To Federico Squeri, a senior basketball player from Italy, this new varsity experience in the USA made him better as a defensive player but also as a person.. In addition to learning many on-court strategies, he has learned the importance of being on time at any practice and games because ‘if someone on our team is late, we run as a consequence’ but most importantly, it is fundamental for the respect of the others who want to begin practice on time.”

The school has built a solid foundation for the future, with plans to expand and improve the program in the coming years, regardless of whether the team will win or lose. The inaugural season will not only elevate the school’s position in the sports community but will also instill a sense of pride and enthusiasm among students and supporters.
