A burst of excitement and friendly rivalry will take over the halls of our school strating Monday, Feb 24th, thanks to the next round of Selfie Knockout, a student-organized game that has quickly become a campus-wide sensation. Bringing together both students and faculty, the game challenges participants to snap a selfie with their assigned target to “eliminate” them, leading to a thrilling blend of strategy, suspense, and spontaneous teamwork.
Margo and Cami, both 11th grade students, needed to come up with an Innovation and Impact project. Inspired by a tradition from a previous school they decided to launch Selfie Knockout injecting a new sense of community and fun into school life—and from bathroom stakeouts to dorm chases, it’s clear that the competition is more intense than anyone expected. “My old school did something similar, and it was really exciting. It got very competitive, and almost the whole school engaged in it,” Margo said. “We thought it was a great idea to bring here because we don’t really have a lot of traditions like that, and it seems to be working really well.”
The idea behind the game is simple but takes a lot of creativity and endurance. The more intense the competition, the more challenging the task. “The preparation is not too difficult, but it takes too long to send all the targets and assassins out every day,” Cami said. “At one point, we were texting 60 people individually with their assignments.”
It has been worth it, however. The game has sparked excitement and unified students in fresh ways. “What we’ve enjoyed most is all the submissions we get and how engaged students seem to be with the game,” Margo said. “It’s awesome to see people who don’t usually socialize with each other taking pictures together.”
The competitiveness has created some dramatic moments. “People would follow you to the bathroom or wait 30 minutes outside your door,” Margo said, chuckling. “Some would even follow you into your room. It was intense.”
As play continues, it’s clear that Selfie Knockout not only added a dash of excitement to ordinary life but also united the school community, one photo at a time.
