The Community Service club at EF Academy is committed to making real impacts within the community. The club meets every Monday and Wednesday afternoon on the bottom floor of Strong Hall, where it has become one of the most popular activities among EF students.
The club aims to make a difference outside of the school while simultaneously helping students develop personally and academically through socializing and contributing in professional settings. According to Renee, a 12th grader and the club’s Vice President, “joining is an incredible way to make a real difference while also growing personally.”
By collaborating with various organizations to host events, members have the opportunity to enter the real world, contributing to communities larger than those which are immediate to them. It fosters students to be empathetic and sensitive as well as to think outside of their personal experience in order to make lasting impacts in the community.
For example, from October 21st to October 31st, the Community Service club hosted a Halloween canned food drive in partnership with Friends in Deed, a local non-profit organization dedicated to helping those in need, in order to hand out foods for low-income families during the holiday season.
Another upcoming event is the annual blood drive. With the help of the Red Cross, a national humanitarian organization, this event will be hosted in Robinson gym on Wednesday, November 20th from 8:45AM to 3:45PM. Students who are eligible are highly encouraged to participate as donating blood is a simple yet powerful way to support those in critical need. With the pressure of the ongoing hurricane season in Florida, the demand is higher than ever. “A person’s body can regenerate the blood [that was drawn] immediately and will be able to donate [again] within two months,” said a Red Cross representative. Last year, the club had donated 30 packets of blood to the organization, the new goal is to reach 40.
The club will host one of the booths during Wellness Wednesday. They will be advertising for their new events with more information to educate students about their own body.
Students might have questions regarding the capacity of the club because it is one of the most popular clubs among students. However, the club’s President Minseo, an 11th grader, tells students not to worry. “We always need more hands, so please do join the club,” Minseo said.
With its accelerating popularity, the club continues to attract new members. If you are interested in contributing to the community, developing personally and professionally, or simply boosting your college application, being in this club would be a great help.
