The Outdoor Education Club at EF Academy Pasadena takes learning beyond the classroom, with activities like hiking, climbing, fishing, and camping that foster a deep connection with nature.
Led by Mr. Rick Duque and co-teacher Ms. Melissa Vineyard, the club’s primary goal, according to Ms. Vineyard, is to encourage students to “get out to nature and move.” “Students spend a lot of time in class,” Ms. Vineyard said, “so it’s good to go outside.” She emphasizes that spending time outdoors is essential for students’ well-being and development. The club also strives to expose students to various outdoor activities, including visiting local farmers’ markets and exploring nature.
Recently, the club hiked through the scenic trails of Eaton Canyon, explored new heights at The Post Climbing facility in Pasadena, and enjoyed a unique fishing lesson led by Lorenzo from Guppies Fishing, who transformed the campus pool into an interactive fishing experience. With experts like Lorenzo sharing hands-on techniques, the club provides students with practical skills and a fresh perspective on the natural world.
Students have responded positively to their experiences in the club. “Best club!” said Bliss, a 10th grader, while Jack, also a 10th grader, shared that “it’s good; it’s fun.” Lint, an 11th grader found the club to be “interesting,” and Vivian, an 11th grader, described it as a “cool club.” Winston, also an 11th grader added, “It’s good; it’s interesting,” highlighting the variety of activities that keep students engaged and excited.
Since its inception, the Outdoor Education Club has experienced significant growth. Mr. Duque noted that “last year, the first time, it was just six people. Now we have seventeen-eighteen people.” This increase in participation reflects a growing interest in outdoor learning and adventure among students.
Activities typically take place from 3:45 PM to approximately 5:15 PM. When staying on campus, the club normally finishes at 4:45 PM.
