Deepseek, a new Chinese AI model, has challenged the established AI companies.
At the end of January, DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, made headlines with its powerful new models. The release of DeepSeek V2 and its coding model, DeepSeek Coder, triggered a major reaction in the AI market. Investors and companies rushed to evaluate the impact, causing stock prices of major AI firms to fluctuate.
DeepSeek’s advancements have put pressure on industry leaders like OpenAI and Google, as their models offer competitive performance at lower costs. This sudden shift led to concerns over market stability, with some companies losing value as investors adjusted their expectations.
The AI industry is rapidly evolving, and DeepSeek’s rise proves that competition is stronger than ever. As new models emerge, the market will continue to see turbulence, but innovation remains at the heart of this technological race.
DeepSeek’s new AI models, especially in coding and math could help students at EF Academy with assignments, research, and studying. If the school integrates AI into learning it might change how students approach subjects like computer science math, and even writing
How do students at EF Academy use AI in their schoolwork?
Riccardo, a 12th grader, shared that he mostly uses AI for History and English to help with research and summaries, and sometimes for math to check his work. When asked if AI helps students learn or makes them too dependent, Alessandro, a 12th grader, said that it depends on how it is used. “If you just copy answers, you don’t learn, but if you use it to explain things, it’s really good,” he said.
On the topic of school rules, Ben, a 12th grader, believes that there should be some guidelines, like not letting AI do all the work, but that students should still be allowed to use it for learning and research. Sofia, a 9th grade student, said, “I use AI for schoolwork–not all the time, but in certain cases I really need it. If I don’t understand the topic, it helps me get started when I can’t come up with ideas on my own.”
These perspectives show that while AI is a helpful tool, responsible use is key.
With AI tools improving, students may have more choices in the future. DeepSeek’s rise shows how quickly AI technology is advancing and it could push more schools to embrace AI assisted learning However, concerns about AI over use and academic integrity still exist.
Some teachers worry that students depend too much on AI which could impact learning. There are also concerns about plagiarism as AI tools can generate full essays or answers however many students find AI helpful for learning and understanding difficult subjects. Mr. Washburn said, “I think AI has a place in the classroom. Students need to be taught how to use it in a way that supports their learning. My biggest concern is that students lose a bit of the creative process, but I think it’s important that they know how to use it properly.”
EF Academy students already use AI for different subjects, and with DeepSeeks’ rise, even more options might appear. The question is will AI become a normal part of schoolwork? Or, will schools set limits on its use? One thing is clear: AI is here to stay and it is changing how students learn.
