The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, commonly abbreviated as MBTI, is a personality assessment tool developed based on the theories of psychologist Carl Jung. It was introduced in 1962 in the United States by Katharine Cook Briggs and is now widely used around the world to categorize people into one of sixteen “personality types.” Each type is said to have its own specific strengths, weaknesses, and values.
The International Changemaker surveyed 20 EF Academy students to find out how they are using the MBTI to build and strengthen their relationships.
Of the twenty students asked, “Do you feel that MBTI has helped improve your friendships,” six answered “yes.” One student said that “the MBTI has helped me understand how my friends think.” Another student said, “knowing my friends’ likes and dislikes has helped me to be more creative in the way I interact with them.” It seems that many students see the MBTI not just as a diagnostic tool but as a useful guide for enhancing their friendships.
Additionally, when asked, “Have you ever changed the way you interact with friends based on their MBTI?” Most people also answered “yes” to this question. One commented: “Now that I know what topics my friends like to talk about, I feel more comfortable approaching them.” This suggests that understanding MBTI can improve the quality of communication.
When it comes to romance, students were asked if they have “ever thought about MBTI compatibility?” Many students noted that people with similar MBTI types are sometimes easier to talk to.
When asked, “Has MBTI influenced how you approach someone you like?”, several students answered “Yes.” One student shared that “knowing their MBTI helps me understand how to make them happy.” Another said, “I can communicate in a way that makes them feel more comfortable.” It seems that MBTI is even useful for giving romantic advice!
One student shared that the MBTI has been helpful for navigating social situations. “I often feel drained in large crowds,” the student said, “but MBTI has helped me understand my limits and manage them better.” By gaining insight into their personality and recognizing personal boundaries, students are able to navigate daily life more comfortably.
As the survey shows, the MBTI is being used by EF Academy students to deepen their relationships with friends and to improve their own approach in relationships. When you want to understand someone better, a quick peek at the MBTI may help you get closer to them.
