Every Monday and Wednesday, members of the Model United Nations club gain valuable experience in diplomacy, public speaking, and critical thinking. The club encourages teamwork and leadership, allowing students to step into the role of world leaders as they work together to solve real-world challenges.
Since the founding of EF Academy, the Model UN Club has offered an opportunity for students to explore global issues and develop important skills. Model UN is a place where students in numerous schools around the world learn how to find solutions to global problems through debate, negotiation, and discussion. Topics covered include human rights, peace and security, climate action, gender equality, and global health.
As the club’s teacher Ms. Foley said, “It is a great club because it really does teach you how international relations work, how the world works. Model UN really does function like the real United Nations organization, so if you ever wonder about how the United Nations determines whether or not to intervene in a situation or how they develop the sustainability goals that we study in Innovation & Impact, all of these questions are things that are actually dealt with in Model UN.”
According to Adrian, a 12th grader and the club’s secretary, participants have gained valuable skills in writing and research. Margo, an 11th grader and a long-time member, added that the club “definitely gave me a sense of community, just because I’ve been in it since my freshman year and everybody in it is in it for the same purpose, which is understanding current global issues. And just learning more about the world and speaking, which is great.”
Model UN at EF Academy represents our school at various conferences across the country, including events at the University of California, Irvine. Last year, the club traveled to New York, where they won two awards at the EF New York MUN conference. “The plan for this year is that in November, we’ll go to the UCLA conference. Then in February or April, we’ll go to the USC conference or the UCSB conference. And students from New York might come here this year,” Margo said.
Participating in Model UN not only enhances your understanding of global issues but also helps build a strong college application by demonstrating critical skills like leadership, teamwork, and public speaking. Whether you are interested in global affairs or simply want to improve your communication skills, the Model UN Club offers a great way to grow and prepare for the future.
